CGNewsTip: Coast Guard cutter plows through frozen Penobscot

The Bangor Daily News has an interesting article, with pictures, about the Cutter Tackle working the Penobscot River.

ABOARD THE U.S. COAST GUARD CUTTER TACKLE — The boat’s engine chugged to life beneath the frigid water, breaking the morning silence and sending ripples along the waterway.

The sun had just begun to peek above the horizon as the seven members of the U.S. Coast Guard cutter Tackle out of Rockland eased away from a dock in Winterport.

The crew’s task on Tuesday was a simple, yet essential one: break the ice buildup along the Penobscot River to allow other vessels to pass if needed and prevent potential flooding.
