MUNISING — Two Grand Marais residents recently received recognition from the U.S. Coast Guard for their help in guiding a sea-battered tugboat to safety during a ferocious December storm on Lake Superior.

Howard Baker and Lee Durrwachter were surprised with special recognition by the Coast Guard Sector Sault and the USCG Auxiliary Division 28-09CR.

“I was completely surprised,” Durrwachter said. “It was quite exciting. Being recognized for your contribution is always nice.”

“We were just doing our jobs,” Baker said. “The Coast Guard thinks we saved a couple of lives.”
