Coast Guard crew tackles trash; countywide cleanup day today

MAALAEA – The Aloha Aina community cleanup got an early start Friday as a crew of volunteers from Coast Guard Station Maalaea tackled an accumulation of trash and discarded appliances at Maalaea Harbor.

“It was just a lot of plastic, broken bottles, a couple of water heaters, washers and dryers,” said Petty Officer Doug Swaney. “We took out maybe 1,300 to 1,500 pounds of trash in three, three and a half hours.”
