PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is searching for a man Friday who reportedly fell off his boat Thursday while clamming in the Back Sound near Fort Macon, North Carolina.

Missing is Ricky Lewis, 48.

A relative of Lewis contacted Coast Guard Sector North Carolina Command Center watchstanders at approximately 10 p.m. Thursday reporting Lewis was missing while crabbing in the Back Sound.

Sector North Carolina watchstanders issued an urgent marine information broadcast and dispatched crews aboard a 25-foot Response Boat – Small and a 24-foot RBS from Coast Guard Station Fort Macon, North Carolina, and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, to search for Lewis.

Also assisting in the search are crews from National Park Service, MCAS Cherry Point (PEDRO) and Harkers Island Fire and rescue.

Lewis’s boat was located near Shell Point with the outboard motor down, anchor on deck and two buckets of clams aboard.
