Canadian officers to honor fallen shipmate

MCKINLEYVILLE, Calif. – A group of retired Royal Canadian Armed Forces officers will present a photograph of Royal Canadian Navy Sub Lieutenant Allen Alltree to Captain Christopher Martino, commanding officer of Coast Guard Group / Air Station Humboldt Bay at a ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m., Wednesday.

SubLt. Alltree, a Canadian aviator serving with the U.S. Coast Guard in a pilot exchange program, was killed in the crash of the Sikorsky HH-52A Sea Guard helicopter, CG-1363, while evacuating Humboldt County residents during the 1964 floods. A group of SubLt. Alltree’s classmates will present a new photograph of Alltree to the Coast Guard for inclusion in the Coast Guard’s Humboldt Bay Memorial. They will also present a donation to the Petty Officer Nininger Scholarship at Humboldt State University.

Coast Guard helicopter CG-1363 crashed on a rescue mission near Trinidad, Calif. on December 22, 1964. Also on board were Coast Guard Lt. Donald Prince, Petty Officer Second Class James A. Nininger Jr., and four civilians — Ferndale residents Arnold “Bud” Hansen, Marie Bahnsen, Betty Kemp and Kemp’s 20-month-old daughter, Melanie.
