Busy weekend off Long Island reminds boaters to prepare and stay safe

NEW YORK – After a busy weekend off of Long Island, the Coast Guard is reminding the boating public to practice safe boating during the active summer season.

The following cases indicate the importance of preparedness and serve as examples of how challenging the maritime environment can be even to experienced mariners.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Shinnecock responded to a report of a 12-year-old girl with neck and back injuries on board a 38-foot pleasure craft aground in West Shinnecock Bay. A paramedic and emergency medical technician placed the girl on a backboard and transported her to the Coast Guard response boat. The Coast Guard transported the girl and her mother back to Station Shinnecock where they were airlifted to Stonybrook Hospital, July 26, 2014.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station New London observed a 6-foot dinghy that was taking on water due to a mechanical issue, near City Pier in New London, Conn, July 26, 2014. The vessel was used as a spotter boat for sailboat training in the Thames River. The boatcrew recovered the vessel operator and boat then took them back to the pier.

A rescue boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Fire Island responded to a disabled 26-foot vessel, 23 miles south of Fire Island, July 26, 2014. Commercial salvage was unable to respond. The Coast Guard was unable to establish good communications with the vessel operator in addition to severe weather forecasted for the area. The boatcrew towed the vessel safely to Robert Moses Boat Basin.

A boarding team from Coast Guard Station East Moriches conducted a boarding of a 50-foot vessel that was disabled south of Moriches Inlet, July 27, 2014. The boarding team observed the following five violations: No Oil pollution placard, no garbage placard, no waste management plan, no inland navigation rules and improper installation of type III marine sanitation device. The owner of the vessel is required to repair all discrepancies prior to departure from port.
