Body of missing man found in North Carolina

CHOCOWINITY, N.C. – A Coast Guard Auxiliary boat crew located the body of a missing Washington, N.C., man at 10:45 a.m. Monday about 2 miles southeast of the mouth of Chocowinity Bay, near Hills Point.

The missing man’s son called 911 at 7:12 p.m. Sunday and reported that he lost sight of his father after he jumped in the water to swim. The son said that his father swam some before he turned away and lost sight of his father.

Station Hobucken deployed their 25-foot rescue boat crew after the Beaufort Sheriff’s Department called for assistance and Air Station Elizabeth City launched an MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew to search for the missing man.

The Coast Guard searched Sunday alongside the Beaufort Sheriff’s Department, Beaufort Fire Department, Craven County Divers, sonar boats and recreational boaters in the area. Searches continued through the night by boat and an Elizabeth City helicopter continued the search by air at first light Monday.
