Body of missing Jonesport man found near Indian Point

SOUTH PORTLAND, Maine – During a multi-agency search for a Jonesport, Maine, man who went missing yesterday, a good Samaritan located his body in the surf tonight near Indian Point on Beal’s Island, Maine.

Dead is Roy Lenfesty.

Lenfesty kept a small sailboat moored near Beal’s Island and left yesterday morning to check on it as he did every day, but his wife became concerned when he didn’t call her this afternoon, so she asked a family friend to go check on him.

The friend called Coast Guard Station Jonesport at 7:30 p.m., when he found Lenfesty’s boat overturned on the rocks, attached to a dingy with some of his personal belongings inside.

Station Jonesport launched a 27-foot rescue boat, and the First District Command Center in Boston diverted a Falcon jet that was already in the area. Maine Marine Patrol, the Washington County Police Department and local volunteers also assisted in the search.

The good Samaritan located Lenfesty’s body at about 9:30 p.m., roughly 200 yards south of the sailboat.
