Auxiliary medevacs man injured in a fall off a boat

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND — Members of the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary, the service’s uniformed volunteer component, medically evacuated a 31-year-old man who was injured falling off a boat near Diversey Harbor in Lake Michigan while watching the Chicago Air and Water Show about 2 p.m. Sunday.

The man reportedly struck a nearby personal watercraft as he was falling, injuring his shoulder.

Coast Guard Auxiliary members who were in the area enforcing safety zones for the Air and Water Show heard someone report the incident on VHF-FM marine radio Ch. 16 and immediately responded to assist.

The injured man was back on the vessel he fell from when the Auxiliary crew arrived. One of the Auxiliarists, who also happened to be a physician, reported it appeared the man dislocated his shoulder. The injured man was taken aboard the Auxiliary vessel and transported to a temporary triage center for the Air and Water Show in Belmont Harbor, about one mile away.
