Anchorage Coast Guard Offers Free Commercial Fishing Vessel Exams

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – Vessel examiners from Coast Guard Sector Anchorage will conduct free courtesy exams of commercial fishing vessels in Dillingham, King Salmon and Naknek from June 10 to June 20, 2007. This effort is to maximize safety of mariners for the upcoming Bristol Bay salmon fishery. Vessels that fully comply with Coast Guard regulations will earn decals that will lessen their chances of being subject to Coast Guard boardings while underway.

The professional team of vessel examiners will be happy to answer questions and provide materials that will enhance vessel safety. The examiners will also be available to clear any outstanding violations received during previous Coast Guard boardings.

Safety prevention programs offered by the Coast Guard and partnering agencies and organizations have reduced commercial fishing vessel casualties nation-wide by more than fifty percent over the past ten years.

The Coast Guard encourages vessel operators to sign up for exams in advance at the Dillingham and King Salmon/Naknek Harbor Master’s Offices. Operators may also contact Chief Petty Officer Steve Garcia or Petty Officer Second Class Clint Mooers of Coast Guard Sector Anchorage at (w) 907-271-6700 or (c) 907-317-8699. Examiners will also monitor VHF-FM channel 22 after June 10.
