Air Station Traverse City medevacs injured ATV rider

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – U.S. Coast Guard medically evacuated a 24-year-old male who sustained a broken leg after a fall from an ATV in the woods of Moorestown, Saturday, at about 2:45 p.m.

“He was in a fair amount of pain,” said Lt. Mike Myers, HH-65C rescue helicopter pilot. “Initially, the rolling hills northwest of the depression made communications difficult.”

A rescue swimmer assisted the man safely onto a backboard and then hoisted on board.

Emergency Medical Services treated him on scene prior the air crew’s arrival.

Air Station Traverse City transferred the man to Munson Medical.

Kalkaska County 911 dispatch conferred with the U.S. Air Force, which is responsible for the mission of inland Search and Rescue.

It is not known how his injury occurred or for how long he was riding the ATV.

The Coast Guard worked closely with both Kalkaska County and the U.S. Air Force to coordinate swift and safe medical attention.
