ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 72-year-old man was rescued from the 28-foot commercial fishing vessel Nina, by the Coast Guard approximately 15 miles west of Hudson, Fla., Wednesday.

The master aboard the Nina contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 5:45 p.m., via VHF-FM channel 16 radio reporting he was suffering from chest pains and in need of medical assistance.

Watchstanders launched an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater. The crew arrived on scene at 7 p.m., hoisted the man off the Nina and transported him to Tampa General Hospital in stable condition.

“The coordination between the distressed party, Air Station Clearwater and Sector St. Petersburg was spot on,” said Petty Officer 1st Class Jon Pankey, rescue coordinator at the sector. “This case is also a great example of how quickly responders can arrive on scene to assist when boaters have the proper communication equipment on board their vessel.”
