MIAMI — Six people were rescued by a Coast Guard Station Islamorada, Fla., boatcrew in the vicinity of John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park, Fla., Saturday.
At approximately noon, Station Islamorada received a distress call from a person clinging to the hull of a 16-foot capsized vessel requesting assistance. Coast Guard Sector Key West was notified and issued an Urgent Marine Information Broadcast and launched a boatcrew from Station Islamorada and an MH-65 helicopter crew from Coast Guard Air Station Miami to respond.
Upon arriving on scene, the Station Islamorada boatcrew recovered the six survivors from the water and the hull of the capsized vessel with the assistance of a good Samaritan. The survivors were then transferred to emergency medical services at John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park.
Three of the survivors were reported to have minor injuries.
