ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — A 27-year-old man was rescued by the Coast Guard 10 miles west of Crystal River Tuesday.

A crewmember aboard a 48-foot commercial fishing vessel contacted Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg watchstanders at 10:45 a.m., via VHF-FM channel 16 radio reporting the man was suffering from abdominal pain and needed assistance.

A 25-foot Response Boat — Small crew from Coast Guard Station Yankeetown arrived on scene, transferred the patient to the RBS and transported him to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission boat ramp where he was met by emergency medical services and taken to Seven Rivers Regional Medical Center in Crystal River.

“This is a great example of how having the proper communications equipment aboard a vessel can aid in the Coast Guard’s quick response,” said Lt. Michael Persun, search and rescue coordinator at the sector.
