MIAMI — Two people were rescued early Saturday morning after falling off their boat off Key Largo, Florida, Friday night.
Rescued was Sean McGovern, a 50-year-old male from Key Largo, and Mellisa Morris, a 52-year-old female visiting from Texas.
Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami received a report from the Broward County Sheriff’s Office that an off-duty detective and firefighter located and recovered two people in the water off Hallandale Beach, Florida, early Saturday morning. The couple reported they fell into the water and were separated from their 30-foot Island Hopper boat at approximately 6 p.m., off of Key Largo.
The couple treaded water throughout the night until they were found by the off-duty detective and firefighter.
The couple were not wearing personal floatation devices and had no means to signal or communicate with nearby boaters.
Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale rendezvous with the good Samaritans and transported them to Coast Guard Station Fort Lauderdale where they were picked up by their friends.
A broadcast has been issued to alert boaters of the missing boat.
There were no reports of any injuries.
The Coast Guard strongly urges mariners to be prepared in case of emergencies and to bring survival equipment such as signalling and sound devices, a personal EPIRB, cell phone, radio and lifejackets while underway to increase chances of survival in the event something goes wrong.
