MIAMI — One person died, one person was rescued and two people are missing after a suspected Cuban migrant aboard a homemade raft was found by a good Samaritan in Biscayne Bay, Fla., Monday.
Coast Guard and partner agency rescue crews are conducting a search for two people in the water after a good Samaritan contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Miami and reported he found a man aboard a homemade vessel approximately seven miles southwest of Key Biscayne, Fla.
The man was transferred to a Miami-Dade Fire Rescue vessel and reported three other people possibly drowned after he lost contact with them during their journey through the Florida Straits.
Sector Miami watchstanders launched Coast Guard Air Station Miami MH-65 helicopter and HC-144 airplane rescue crews as well as two boatcrews from Coast Guard Station Miami Beach, Fla. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue, Customs and Border Protection and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission crews also responded to the report to assist with the search for the missing people.
