Wreckage of Overdue Aircraft Located

JUNEAU, Alaska – A Coast Guard helicopter crew from Air Station Kodiak located the wreckage of an overdue Pen Air aircraft in the vicinity of Port Heiden.

The two people on board have been reported as deceased on arrival, however names are being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

The Coast Guard Command Center in Juneau received a 121.5 megahertz signal from an emergency beacon at 6:32 pm yesterday. Thirty minutes later they received notification that a Pen Air aircraft was overdue.

A C-130 aircraft and a helicopter were dispatched from Kodiak, and assets began searching the vicinity of Port Heiden at 9:25 p.m., with the cooperation of a second Pen Air aircraft, local agencies and civilians.

State troopers and local authorities have taken over efforts on the ground at this time, and Coast Guard assets are returning to Kodiak.

On scene weather conditions were scattered clouds at about 2000 feet, 20 to 30 know winds and 8 miles visibility.

The cause of the crash is unknown at this time.
