Women Bears Record First Ever Postseason Win

NEW LONDON, CONN. – New England Women’s and Men’s Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Player of the Year Natalie Moyer led all scorers with 19 points including five 3-pointers while Coast Guard made a season-high 13 three-pointers as the top-seeded Bears recorded the program’s first ever postseason win, a 74-47 victory over eighth-seeded Maine Maritime in the first round of the ECAC Division III New England Tournament.

The Bears (23-5) advance to the semifinals and will take on fourth-seeded Endicott on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Fitchburg State.

Seventh-seeded Nichols will take on third-seeded and host Fitchburg State in the other semifinal. The championship game will be played at Fitchburg State on Sunday.

Coast Guard, which has shatted the single-season record for wins in a season this year, jumped out to a 13-2 lead with 12:45 left in the first half and never looked back.

The Bears held Maine Maritime to just seven field goals in the first half, but the Mariners stayed in the game by going a perfect 12 for 12 from the foul line in the first half. Coast Guard led 40-26 at the break.

Senior Corinne McCormack added 12 points to go with her seven rebounds while sophomore Melissa Martinelli had 10 points and a game-high nine rebounds for the Bears.

Freshman Amethyst Cousins led Maine Maritime (19-10) with 14 points while classmate Ashley Tilton added 13 points and game-high eight points.

Coast Guard was 13 for 31 from 3-point range (41.9 percent) while shooting 45.8 percent from the floor (27-59).

Maine Maritime was 14 for 41 from the floor (34.1 percent) while making just one of eight from 3-point range. The Mariners were 18 for 20 from the free throw line.
