Vessel with 14 Migrants Intercepted

MIAMI – Crewmembers from Coast Guard Stations Miami Beach, Fort Lauderdale, and the Coast Guard Cutter Gannet successfully intercepted a 30-foot vessel carrying 14 migrants, claiming Guyanese and Brazilian citizenship, in an apparent smuggling venture of attempting the illegally enter the United States.

The vessel was picked up on radar at 10:18 p.m., 15 miles north of Bimini, Bahamas, by crewmembers from the Gannet.

An HH-60 Blackhawk helicopter from the Air and Marine branch of Customs and Border Protection, a HU-25 Falcon jet from Coast Guard Air Station Miami, and two 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement vessels from Miami Beach and Fort Lauderdale, intercepted the Florida registered vessel at 11:35 p.m. six miles east of Baker’s Haulover Inlet.

Coast Guard Cutter Gannet is an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
