Three Taiwan Long-Liners Caught Fishing In Northern Marianas EEZ

Pacific Magazine reports that

Three Taiwan fishing boats were caught illegally fishing in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Northern Marianas, the Saipan Tribune reports.

The long-line fishing boats were spotted by a U.S. Coast Guard cutter patrol plane on August 12. Five vessels were spotted, three of which were actively fishing. Another fishing boat was transiting the EEZ, and a fifth was “loitering,” the Coast Guard said.

The patrol plane contacted the Coast Guard Cutter Kukui, which pursued the Taiwan fishing boats. While the fishing boats fled after spotting the Coast Guard aircraft, the Kukui was able to catch one of the vessels after a 50-mile chase.

A spokesman said the Coast Guard documented two cases of illegal fishing in the Northern Marianas EEZ in the 2006 fiscal year.
