Sailor clinging to boat rescued near Hull, Massachusetts
BOSTON- A Hull, Mass., native was pulled from the water by a Coast Guard boat crew around 6:30 p.m., Wednesday as he was clinging to his boat in the Hull Bay.
At 6:26 p.m., Coast Guard Station Point Allerton received a call from a good Samaritan on shore who reported a person in the water, hanging on to side of a sailboat about 500 yards south of the Coast Guard station.
A 41-foot boat crew from Station Point Allerton was in the area and diverted to the scene while a 25-foot rescue boat crew launched from the station to assist.
The boat crews arrived on scene at 6:33 p.m., and the 25-foot boat crew pulled Timotej Eclmovic from the 68 F water.
The Hull Harbormaster towed Eclmovics 14.5-foot sailboat back to its mooring.
No injuries were reported.
“His life jacket definitely helped as he was clinging to the side of his boat,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer 2nd Class Nicholas Lindstrom, the officer of the day Station Point Allerton at the time of the rescue. “The water temperature was in the high 60s and the closest shore was about 500 yards away. That would have been pretty far for him to try to swim.”
Coast Guard responds to crane collapse
BOSTON - The Coast Guard and local police are responding to the site where a crane collapsed today in Quincy, Mass.
The Coast Guard is maintaining a safety zone between the Fore River Bridge and the Braintree terminal to direct boating traffic away from the area.
Coast Guard Sector Boston launched a 41-foot boat crew from Station Point Allerton after the Quincy Police Department notified the sector that the crane had collapsed on land at about 1 p.m.
“Although the accident does not affect the waterway, we want to manage onlookers and the general boating public near the site,” said Lt. Tony Cao, the command duty officer at Sector Boston.
Sailboat, crew found safe
BOSTON - The sailboat Elan and its crew were found safe approximately four miles north of Race Point near Provincetown, Mass., today.
Coast Guard Sector Boston received a call from the Salem Harbor Master around 8:30 a.m., reporting the Elan crew notified them they were disabled but still making their way toward Florida on sail power.
The harbor master relayed the Elan’s position to the Coast Guard and a 41-foot rescue boat from Coast Guard Station Point Allerton was dispatched to the area. They located the Elan and confirmed two-person crew was uninjured and not in any distress.
The crew did not requested any Coast Guard assistance.
“We encouraged the family and crew to develop a more structured communication plan for the rest of the trip,” said Lt. Duane Ripley, the command duty officer for Sector Boston. “We also recommended the crew file a float plan with their family letting them know when and where they plan to stop.”
Coast Guard responds to fire aboard Plymouth charter boat
BOSTON (D1 Public Affairs) - Five Coast Guard boats responded when a charter whale-watching vessel carrying 36 people reported an engine fire while they were six miles off Gurnet Lighthouse in Plymouth, Mass., about 8:30 a.m., today.
The 77-foot Capt. John & Son is no longer on fire and the smoke had dissipated. There are no reports of injuries, and the boat does not appear to be taking on water.
Coast Guard boats from Station Cape Cod Canal, Mass., Station Point Allerton, Mass., Station Point Allerton,, Mass., and Station Scituate, Mass., responded. Additionally, several good Samaritan vessels stood by to help, if needed.
Capt. John & Son’s sister ship, Tales of the Sea, picked up all of the passengers and continued on with the whale-watching trip. Another sister ship, Andy Lynn VI, is towing the Capt. John & Son to Plymouth. A 41-foot utility boat from Station Point Allerton is escorting them to the harbor.
Coast Guard ends search for Massachusetts man
BOSTON (D1 Public Affairs) - The Coast Guard suspended the search at 7:30 this morning for a Quincy, Mass., man who fell overboard July 3, near Deer Island, Mass.
“The decision to end an active search is a very difficult one,” said Capt. Gail Kulisch, the commanding officer of Coast Guard Sector Boston. “While the Coast Guards active effort has ended after an exhaustive search, we will remain vigilant for any additional information or sightings related to this case.”
Anthony Tufo, 60, fell overboard the Nina Maria while en route the Winthrop, Mass., Yacht Club around 6 p.m., Thursday.
During the 40 hour search which began Thursday evening, the 87-foot Coast Guard Cutter Hammerhead from Woods Hole, Mass., boat crews from Station Point Allerton and Jayhawk helicopter crews from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., repeatedly scoured approximately 50 square miles looking for Tufo. Several state and local agencies, including the Massachusetts State and Environmental Police, the Massachusetts Port Authority, Quincy Police Department, Middlesex sheriff and Boston and Winthrop fire departments also saturated the area. In addition, dive teams from the state police and the Boston fire department searched the waters in the vicinity of where Tufo was last seen. Numerous agencies supported the effort with shoreline searches.
“This search has truly been a community effort,” said Kulisch. “The support from our state and local partners has been a valuable asset and we appreciate all the time and effort of all those who helped.”
Coast Guard currently searching for person in water
BOSTON (D1 Public Affairs) - Several Coast Guard crews and local agencies are currently searching for a 60-year man who fell in the water in the vicinity of Deer Island, Mass., around 6 p.m.
Coast Guard Sector Boston Command Center received a call from a 34-foot Stingray pleasure craft, the Nina Maria, reporting one of their passengers fell off the boat while en route to the Winthrop, Mass., Yacht Club.
Currently onscene are: a 25-foot and 41-foot boat crew from Coast Guard Station Point Allerton located in Hull, Mass., the 87-foot cutter Hammerhead from Woods Hole, Mass., a Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Cape Cod, Mass., the state police and port authority. The Logan and Winthrop fire departments are conducting searches on land for the missing man.
Currently there are 15-25 knot winds with seas of 2-3 feet and there is a severe storm expected to hit the area shortly.
