SAN FRANCISCO — Coast Guard Air Station San Francisco was scheduled to assist the Ventana Wildlife Society in rescuing eight condors from a holding pen at Anderson Ridge south of Big Sur this afternoon.

The California Governor’s Office and State Office of Emergency Services contacted the Coast Guard earlier today to request air support in moving these endangered animals after the facility where they are being held started to become threatened by wildfires in the area.

An aircrew from Air Station San Francisco will fly down to the Monterrey Airport to pick up several wildlife specialists from the society and then fly into the area where the condors are being held. The Coast Guard crew will shuttle the Wildlife Society members back and forth until all of the condors are safe.

The roads around Anderson Ridge have been closed due to wildfires that began Saturday afternoon.
