Station South Padre Island rescues man near Port Isabel

SOUTH PADRE ISLAND, Texas – A Coast Guard Station South Padre Island boatcrew rescued a man who was swept away by the current while swimming near his sailboat in the Laguna Madre near Port Isabel, Sunday.

A station watchstander received the report from a woman who was aboard the sailboat unsuccessfully attempting to gain control of the vessel. The station launched a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement boat and a 24-foot Shallow Water Response boat to search for the man and get control of the boat.

Coast Guard, Customs and Border Protection, Texas Parks and Wildlife crews and good Samaritans searched for about 90 minutes before finding the man, who was alive but displaying signs of hypothermia. The man was taken to the station, where he was met by EMS crews and transported to Brownsville Medical Center.
