MARCO ISLAND, Fla. — A 51-year-old female was medically evacuated by Coast Guard crewmembers approximately 45 miles southwest of Marco Island, Monday.
A member aboard the 68-foot commercial fishing vessel, Ana, contacted watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg at 1:17 a.m., reporting the woman was experiencing abdominal pain, shortness of breath and needed to be medevaced.
A 33-foot Special Purpose Craft – Law Enforcement boatcrew from Coast Guard Station Fort Myers Beach was launched to the scene at 3:46 a.m., and arrived at 4:33 a.m.
The woman was transported back to the station in stable condition at 5:38 a.m., where local emergency medical personnel were waiting to transport her to Fort Myers Memorial Hospital.
“Due to the swift actions by the crew at Station Fort Myers Beach, the woman was able to get the medical attention she needed,” said Kevin Coyne, an operations controller at Sector St. Petersburg. “Resources can suddenly become very complex when the patient is 60 miles from land and weather conditions make an air rescue impossible.”
