Station Chicago crew rescues woman near Belmont Harbor, Ill.

CLEVELAND – A U.S. Coast Guard Station Chicago boat crew rescued a 24-year old woman about 500 yards from Belmont Harbor, Ill., at about 3 p.m. Friday, June 11, 2010.

A 25-foot response boat from Station Calumet Harbor operating out of Station Chicago heard the Chicago Fire Department over VHF radio transferring information regarding a possible person in distress.

The small boat arrived on scene about three minutes after notification and found the woman, who had apparently been swimming, said Petty Officer 2nd Class Gontran Carrillo, the coxswain of the response boat.

β€œShe was mildly hypothermic when we got her out of the water,” added Carrillo.

She was transferred to Emergency Medical Services at Belmont Harbor.

Station (small) Chicago is a sub-unit of Station Calumet Harbor. It is a seasonal station open from May 1st until October 31st each year and manned by 1 boat crew from Calumet Harbor.
