ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Crewmembers at Coast Guard Sector St. Petersburg were named the Coast Guard’s Diversity Champions of the Week, Wednesday.

The Diversity Champion distinction is bestowed upon individuals or units who have made significant contributions in support of the Commandant’s Diversity Strategic Plan and Operational Task Diversity.

Leadership from the local chapter for the Association of Naval Services Officers with support from the Sector St. Petersburg Leadership Diversity Advisory Council hosted their very own Martin Luther King Day of Service Jan. 21, at the St. Petersburg’s Salvation Army Sallie House. The MLK Day of Service is part of United We Serve, the President’s national call to service initiative.

Working together they provided the children with pizza, cotton candy, snow cones, popcorn and clowns for entertainment.  They also brought along multiple outdoor games and observed the children playing in a bounce house that was there for the day.  All volunteers were engaged with the children providing them with a positive role model and making this a memorable experience for them.

“Congratulations,” said Capt. Sheryl Dickinson, commander of Sector St. Petersburg.”Your efforts to help brighten the lives of the children at the Sallie House are most commendable, and set the example for others. This was a true team effort, as members from around the area came together in support of the ANSO and LDAC programs.”
