Searchers looking for a missing swimmer near Falmouth Heights Beach

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — The U.S. Coast Guard and numerous local agencies are searching for a missing swimmer near Falmouth Heights Beach, Mass., Wednesday.

Coast Guard Sector Southeastern New England received a call from the Falmouth Harbor Master stating a local lifeguard had lost sight of a man swimming at Falmouth Heights Beach around 3 p.m. The lifeguard reported seeing the man swim to and from shore several times, and later witnessed the man struggling and submerge below the water.

Currently searching are:

  • A 25-foot Response Boat-Small from Coast Guard Station Woods Hole, Mass.
  • An MH-60T Jayhawk helicopter from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod.
  • Falmouth Harbor Master
  • Tow Boat US
  • Falmouth Life Guards

“Searchers will continue looking for the swimmer through the night with a helicopter and the Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark which is scheduled to arrive at 10 p.m.,” said Petty Officer First Class Josh Morales, search coordinator at the First District Command Center in Boston.

The partnerships with local rescue units in the Falmouth area allowed for information to be relayed quickly to agencies in order to bring to bare the number of boats and personnel on scene.

Since January 2011, the Coast Guard has conducted over 2,700 search and rescue case in the northeastern United States.

The Coast Guard Cutter Tiger Shark is an 87-foot patrol boat homeported in Newport, R.I.
