Search for Pilot of Lake Erie Plane Crash Suspended

CLEVELAND — The U.S. Coast Guard suspended the search for the 68-year-old male pilot whose plane crashed landed into Lake Erie after departing from Burke Lakefront Airport.

The search for Mr. Thomas Fijalkovich was suspended at 1 p.m., today, after Coast Guard and local response units saturated a 26 square-mile search area, for up to 16 hours, using 20 different search patterns.

Coast Guard and response units included: Coast Guard Stations Cleveland Harbor, Station Lorain, Station Fairport Harbor, the Coast Guard Cutter Neah Bay and a Coast Guard Air Station Detroit helciopter; and Cleveland Police and Fire Dept.

The Coast Guard will remain on scene to assist the Police and Fire Dept. with dive and recovery operations. The Coast Guard is cooperating with and will assist the Federal Aviation Administration and the Fire Rescue with its investigation of the crash.
