Response continues to oil spill in Mobile Shipping Channel

MOBILE, Ala. — The unified command for the Mobile Ship Channel oil spill is continuing its joint response, Friday, to the release of fuel oil at the Gulf Coast Asphalt, LLC., facility.

Gulf Coast Asphalt has been working in conjunction with Oil Spill Response Organizations to contain the spill. Clean-up crews have recovered 54,000 gallons of oil-water mixture from the river and 33,264 gallons of pure oil was recovered from the secondary containment system.

The OSRO’s have deployed 8,500 feet of containment boom, 500 feet of sorbent boom, three drum skimmers and eight vacuum trucks to assist in clean-up efforts.

The Coast Guard has stood up the Maritime Transportation System Recovery Unit to control the movement of vessels through the spill area.

The Coast Guard has deployed the Coast Guard Cutter Stingray and the Coast Guard Cutter Saginaw to enforce a safety zone on the portion of the river affected by the release. Vessels are being allowed to transit on a case-by-case basis.
