Coast Guard ramps-up security for Fleet Week

Coast Guard District 11 NewsSAN FRANCISCO – Coast Guard law enforcement teams from Sector San Francisco and the Maritime Safety and Security Team San Francisco “swept” downtown San Francisco piers and ferries for hazards and potential threats Tuesday for upcoming Fleet Week festivities.

Increased security along the waterfront are one of the many measures to keep the public safe during this major community event where thousands of visitors are expected to converge in the city.

“The safety and security of Fleet Week patrons and visitors is the Coast Guard’s and partner federal, state and local agencies’ primary focus during this year’s events,” said Petty Officer 2nd Class Christopher Hartman, MSST canine handler.

Sector San Francisco’s primary missions include homeland security, search and rescue, law enforcement, boating safety, aids to navigation and marine environmental protection with a vast area of responsibility reaching into the San Joaquin Delta out to Lake Tahoe and spanning north to Bodega Bay and south to Monterey.

Strategically positioned throughout the nation, the 11 Maritime Safety and Security Teams are a quick response force capable of rapid worldwide deployment in response to changing threat conditions and evolving maritime homeland security mission requirements. They provide waterborne and a shore-side anti-terrorism force protection for strategic shipping, high-interest vessels, critical infrastructure and national special security events like the Presidential Inauguration, the Super Bowl and Fleet Week.
