Overdue Boat Contacts Coast Guard in Astoria

ASTORIA, Ore. — The crew of the 39-foot fishing vessel Kay Ann contacted the Coast Guard at approximately 1:30 p.m. Friday.

The crew of the Kay Ann were two hours from Astoria when they called to inform officials they were fine.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Mellon, homeported in Seattle, and two C-130 Hercules search plane crews from Coast Guard Air Station Sacramento, Calif., searched for the boat since late Thursday after the Kay Ann was reported overdue.

The Kay Ann departed Newport, Ore., with three persons onboard Saturday, July 18, 2009, to fish for tuna. The boat was due to return to Warrenton, Ore., Wednesday. The co-owner of the Kay Ann reported the boat overdue late Thursday when the boat did not return as scheduled.
