Oil Spill Cleanup Efforts Continue on the Schuylkill River

PHILADELPHIA – The Coast Guard, along with local and state agencies, continue cleanup efforts today along the Schuylkill River after two out-of-service tugboats near the Girard Point Bridge sank and began leaking oil Monday.

The owner of the tugboats, Hays Tug and Launch Service Inc. of Chester, Pa., has hired contractors from Clean Venture to cleanup the oil and salvage the boats, and representatives from Meredith Management, an oil spill management company, are overseeing cleanup efforts.

Approximately 1,000 gallons of a oil and fuel mixture has been recovered, and Coast Guard investigators estimate another 1,000 gallons remain.

The spill has been contained, and the impact to wildlife is minimal.

A sheen between the I-95 bridge and the George C. Platt Bridge was observed during a Coast Guard overflight assessment.

The Coast Guard is working on cleanup efforts in conjunction with personnel from:

  • Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection
  • Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission
  • Philadelphia Office of Emergency Management
