Ohio River Closed Near Old Shawneetown, Illinois

Louisville, KY – The Coast Guard has closed the Ohio River from mile marker 847.5 to mile marker 849 near Old Shawneetown, Illinois due to significant shoaling in the navigation channel.

High water and strong current flow on the Wabash River, a tributary that feeds the Ohio River, has significantly decreased the size of the navigation channel where the two rivers meet. The Coast Guard has determined to close the river until a safe navigation channel is identified and marked with navigational buoys.

The Coast Guard is working in close partnership with the Army Corps of Engineers and Industry stakeholders to quickly reopen the navigation channel and resume the flow of commerce on the Ohio River.
