NESU Alameda Holds Change of Command

ALAMEDA, Calif. – Cmdr. John Harding, Commanding Officer of NESU Alameda,  will be relieved by Cmdr. Thomas C. Remmers in a formal change of command ceremony aboard Coast Guard Island here, today at 10:30 a.m.

Harding, a native of Norwalk, Calif., will be retiring to Martinez, Calif. Harding is married to the former Susan Shields. They have two children, Steven, 14, and Kimberly, 11.

Remmers, a native of Lincoln, Neb., is reporting from MLC Pacific, where he was assigned as the engineer officer of WMSL Crew Delta, and as the first product support Integrator for the National Security Cutter WMSL class. During his tour, he was responsible for standing up the maintenance management staff for the new cutter class and planning and executing the first major maintenance periods for U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Bertholf.

Remmers is married to the former Carol Guisinger of Coldwater, Mich. and they have two sons, Nathanael, 6, and Thaddeus, 3.

The change of command is a time-honored naval tradition where the current commanding officer is formally relieved in a ceremony with unit personnel, family and friends in attendance. The ceremony highlights the responsibility of command and demonstrates the transfer of that responsibility from one commanding officer to the next, while still maintaining the ability of the unit to operate successfully.
