Multi-agency search underway for missing man off Kaneohe’s Pyramid Rock

HONOLULU — U.S. Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy and Honolulu Fire Department rescue crews are actively searching for a missing mariner last seen near Pyramid Rock of the Mokapu peninsula in Kaneohe, Friday, March 5, 2009. Coast Guard helicopter crews searched throughout the night and were re-joined by the other agencies at sunrise this morning.

Coast Guard Sector Honolulu search and rescue controllers received a report of a man in distress on a life raft off Pyramid Rock at 6:19 p.m. yesterday. Crews aboard an HH-65 Dolphin rescue helicopter and HC-130 Hercules aircraft from Air Station Barbers Point were launched to aid in the search at 7 p.m. Air crews searched throughout the night with negative results.

Rescue crews from HFD and the U.S. Navy’s Waterfront Operations unit searched before losing visibility at sunset last night. HFD’s rescue helicopter is actively searching and Marines from Marine Corps Base Hawaii and Navy sailors with Waterfront Operations are conducting shoreline searches with K-9 units today.

The man was believed to be about 30 and was wearing a white shirt. It is also believed he was wearing a personal flotation device. No vessels have been reported missing. Anyone with information about the missing man is asked to contact the Coast Guard’s Honolulu Harbor command center at 808-842-2600.
