Missing swimmer report determined to be false alert

1st Coast Guard District NewsBOSTON — Searchers determined Wednesday night that an earlier report of a struggling swimmer was a false alert and have since suspended search efforts near Falmouth Heights Beach in Falmouth, Mass.

Coast Guard personnel at Sector Southeastern New England spoke with Falmouth lifeguards and verified that there are no missing person reports for the area. Searchers also interviewed beach goers and checked to ensure no personal items were left unclaimed on the beach, which could indicate a missing swimmer. Local authorities also checked area parking lots and determined there were no vehicles left unattended which could also indicate a missing swimmer.

Local authorities worked together to respond to the alert, and continued to work closely throughout the search in order to determine if the alert was an actual search and rescue case.

Coast Guard personnel from Station Woods Hole, Mass., Air Station Cape Cod, and the Cutter Tiger Shark participated in the search.
