Massive search ongoing for missing woman and child

Missisquoi Bay, Vt. — The U.S. Coast Guard is searching Lake Champlain in the Missisquoi Bay area for a woman and a child after she called the Quebec, Canada, 911 emergency call center, Sat. July 31, 2010, reporting she was sinking.

Around 7:45 p.m., the Quebec 911 emergency call center received a call from a woman who reported in tears that she was sinking and had a child aboard her vessel on Lake Champlain near Vermont.

The call was disconnected before the call center could gather more information. The call came from a cell phone tower near the Bay just north of the Canadian border from a cell phone that had been disconnected.

The call center stated the woman spoke fluent French.

The Coast Guard is requesting anyone who may have information about this incident or who may have been in or near the area around the time the call was made to call Coast Guard Sector Northern New England at 207-767-0302.
