Injured Sailor Medevaced from Oil Tanker

BOSTON – An Air Station Cape Cod rescue helicopter hoisted an injured sailor suffering from a broken leg from an Italian-flagged oil tanker today 300 nautical miles southeast of Cape Cod.

The motor tanker Alessandra Bottiglieri, a 577-foot ship enroute to Portugal, contacted the Coast Guard after one of its crewman slipped and fell.

The Coast Guard launched the rescue helicopter and an HU-25 Falcon jet, which was needed to stand by on scene as a precaution because of the large distance the ship was from shore.

The helicopter hoisted the sailor 11:36 a.m. and landed safely at Hyannis Airport on Cape Cod about noon where a waiting ambulance transferred him to Cape Cod Hospital.
