Good Samaritan boaters rescue 4 from plane crash in San Juan Islands

Henry BlakeBELLINGHAM, Wash. — Good Samaritan boaters aboard the vessel Northern Rose rescued four people from a plane crash in Cattle Pass near the south end of Lopez Island, Friday morning.

The four survivors, one woman and three men, were transported to Friday Harbor by the crew of the Northern Rose and are being treated for injuries and hypothermia by emergency medical services.

Watchstanders at Coast Guard Sector Puget Sound located in Seattle were notified at 9:13 a.m., by Kenmore Air of an electronic emergency signal for one of their planes. Watchstanders also received a mayday call from the Northern Rose reporting the plane crash at about the same time.

The crew of the Northern Rose transferred the plane crash survivors to EMS at Friday Harbor at 9:45 a.m.

The visibility in the area is only a quarter-mile.

Crews from the Coast Guard Cutter Henry Blake and Coast Guard Station Bellingham are en route to the scene of the wreck to monitor and mitigate the pollution threat. The pilot of the plane reported that the plane sank. The possibility of salvaging the plane is unknown at this time.
