False alarm: Authorities seek owner of unmarked boat

BOSTON – The Coast Guard, Maine Marine Patrol, and Portland Harbor Master launched a search today when an unmanned and unmarked skiff was found drifting in Casco Bay, Maine.

A local fishing boat, the Rambler, discovered the 10-foot, white skiff between Bates Island and Eagle Island near Harspwell Neck, in the northern part of Casco Bay.

The crew of the Rambler took the skiff to Interstate Lobster in Harpswell. Once notified, Coast Guard Sector Northern New England launched a search crew aboard a 25-foot rescue boat from Station South Portland.

Later, the lobster company reported to the Coast Guard that a man called and said it was his boat. At about noon, the Maine Marine Patrol found the man on Bailey Island and confirmed he was the owner.

“We were all really relieved to know he was found safe,” said Lt. Lisa Tinker, command center chief at Sector Northern New England.

She also said it’s important to mark small, unregistered boats with some means of identification.

“Even if it’s a name and number scribbled with a magic marker, it really helps us to pin point our responses,” she said.
