Detroit dive team recovers body of missing man in Detroit River

9th Coast Guard District NewsCLEVELAND – The Coast Guard and other agencies have called off the search for a man last seen drifting down the Detroit River after a local dive team found the man’s body at about 9 p.m.

The Detroit Police Department dive team, working aboard a Detroit Harbormaster boat, found the unidentified man near where he was last seen, in the vicinity of the Detroit Princess.

Search efforts began as search and rescue controllers at Coast Guard Sector Detroit were relayed a call at 4:45 p.m. by Detroit’s 911 dispatch.

The caller reported witnessing a black male floating on his back in the river, between Hart Plaza and Cobo Hall, near the Detroit Princess.

Coast Guard rescue crews involved in the search had been aboard a 33-foot Special Purpose Craft-Law Enforcement (SPC-LE) and a 45-foot Response Boat-Medium (RB-M), both from Station Belle Isle in Detroit, and an MH-65C Dolphin rescue helicopter from Air Station Detroit, located on Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Mt. Clemens, Mich.
