Coast Guardsman Retires After 41 Years of Service

Portsmouth, Va., Feb. 9 ­– After 41 years of dedicated service to the U.S. Coast Guard, CWO4 Donald F. Allen, a Brooklyn, N.Y., native, retired from active duty here today.

Allen most recently served at Coast Guard Atlantic Area here from 2006-2007. His other assignments include three stations, three Reserve units, Coast Guard Headquarters, Marine Safety Office Toledo, Ohio, two port security units, the Ninth Coast Guard District, the Ninth Coast Guard District Office of Law Enforcement and Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown, Va.

In 2004, after a break in service, Allen returned to active duty and was appointed as the School Chief for the newly formed Port Security Specialist “A” school. He was released from active duty in December of 2005, but again returned in April 2006 and served as the Atlantic Area representative, where he continued to work with the program manager for Atlantic Area’s Port Security Units.

Among other qualifications, Allen is a Department of Defense/Coast Guard Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection Instructor, Coast Guard training instructor, Explosive Handling Supervisor, Physical Security Team/Maritime Security Officer, Harbor Safety Officer, Security Officer, Facility Inspection Survey Team and Investigative Officer.

Allen’s personal medals and awards include the Coast Guard Commendation Medal, Coast Guard Achievement Medal, the Commandant’s Letter of Commendation, six Coast Guard Reserve Good Conduct Medals, three National Defense Service Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Coast Guard Rifleman Medal, the Coast Guard Pistol Medal, the Port Security Insignia and the Marine Safety Insignia.

Allen is married to the former Susan Kay Martens of Argos, Indiana. They have two children; Donald F. III and Kelly Sue. Allen is also a retired Lieutenant from the South Bend Police Department, South Bend, Indiana after serving for 21 years.
