Coast Guardsman Drowns In Traverse City, Michigan

From 9&10 News

An Airman stationed at the Coast Guard Air Station in Traverse City drowned Thursday evening after efforts to save him failed.
The drowning happened at about 6 p.m. off shore near the Traverse City volleyball courts on West Grand Traverse Bay.
Lt. Jeremy Loeb with the Coast Guard says Charles J. Krause, 21 of Neenah, Wisc., died on the scene.
Witnesses said Krause was swimming with a woman out past some of the buoys just off shore. After a while, witnesses noticed Krause disappear behind one of those buoys farther out in the water. That’s when Andrew Rozycki and his friend tried to save Krause from drowning. Rozycki and several others pulled Krause onto a dingy, gave him CPR and took him to shore.
“We had a huge slew of people who jumped in and immediately got in there,” Rozycki said. “I was doing what anyone else would’ve done. I think at least three people on the beach who caught this midway were calling 9-1-1.”
Emergency responders and police were on shore waiting but efforts to revive Krause failed.
The Coast Guard says Krause had been working at the Traverse City Air Station for three months.
Krause is originally from Neenah, Wisconsin and was off duty at the time of the accident.
Lt. Loeb with the Coast Guard says they are starting a grieving process as well as continuing to investigate the drowning.
