Coast Guard, Va. Aquarium Stranding Response Team release Loggerhead turtle

Coast Guard District 5 NewsPORTSMOUTH, Va. — A 315-pound Loggerhead turtle, which was rescued by members of Coast Guard Station Cape Charles, Va., and the Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team, was released to the Atlantic Ocean from Virginia Beach, Va., Tuesday.

The turtle named 25, also known as Big Boy, was found entangled in a crab pot line off the coast of Cape Charles, May 22, 2011.

Big Boy’s left front flipper was amputated after veterinarians at the aquarium’s Marine Animal Care Center examined him and determined that to be the best course of action.

After giving Big Boy time to heal and adapt to swimming without his flipper, veterinarians decided that he was ready to return to his natural habitat.
