Coast Guard Training Center Cape May evacuates personnel

Coast Guard Headquarters NewsCAPE MAY, N.J. — Capt. William Kelly, commanding officer of Coast Guard Training Center Cape May, has ordered a mandatory evacuation of the facility based on current estimates of Hurricane Irene’s path and wind speed here, Thursday.

This decision has been made in alignment with a mandatory evacuation order issued by the County of Cape May.

As of 1 p.m., Friday all personnel attached to the training center, including uniformed service members, recruits in training and civilian employees, will be moving to safe havens inland in either Cherry Hill, N.J., or at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst located 18 miles southeast of Trenton, N.J. All recruits currently in training will be relocated to Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

“We want to assure you that the safety and care of our members, employees and recruits is our first priority,” said Lt.j.g. Michael Cole, public affairs officer at the training center. “We will give you updated information as soon as it is available.”

During the storm, recruits will still have a limited ability to contact their family and friends.

This has got to be a 1st. But given that Irene is a CAT4 and will be a CAT2 when it gets there it’s the smart thing to do.

Our daughter is enjoying her first week at the training center. What invaluable experience. Thank you to the USCG for giving the families such resources to peek into our children’s day-to-day. It Makes missing them a little easier.
