Coast Guard to remove pollution from abandoned vessel in Savannah River

SAVANNAH, Ga. – The Coast Guard will begin clean-up operations aboard the 41-foot abandoned fishing vessel Net Web in the Savannah River in Augusta, Ga., Wednesday.

Coast Guard pollution investigators from Marine Safety Unit Savannah, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and the Augusta Riverkeepers conducted an initial assessment and found that a pollution threat existed on Saturday.

A Coast Guard crew will supervise environmental contractors as they remove the remaining pollution aboard the Net Web.

In its current location, the Net Web is partially submerged, but is not blocking a navigable channel.

Any person with knowledge of an oil spill or hazardous material release into a navigable waterway should immediately contact the National Response Center toll-free at 1-800-424-8802.
