On August 4 the Coast Guard, the nation’s oldest continuous maritime service, announced marking a milestone of over one million people saved since the Coast Guard’s inception in 1790. As one of America’s five armed services, the predecessor to the current Coast Guard was created when the first U.S. Congress authorized the construction of a fleet of “revenue marine” cutters. It received its present name in 1915 when the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service. The service expanded in size and responsibilities as the nation grew, and today is responsible for many diverse missions.

Marina del Rey is the largest artificial small-craft harbor in the world and can accommodate nearly 7,000 pleasure boats. Discover Marina del Rey Day is an annual event conducted by the Los Angeles County Department of Beaches and Harbors. It is a fun-filled family and community event showcasing a variety of exhibitor booths offering vital information on health, safety, and the environment.
