Coast Guard to host informational briefing for Station Small Salem’s operating hours change

Mid Atlantic Coast Guard NewsATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — The Coast Guard is scheduled to host an informational briefing regarding the change in operating hours to Coast Guard Station Small Salem, N.J., at the Old Salem Court House, 104 Market St., at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Those interested in attending are encouraged to RSVP at CoastGuardSalem@uscg.mil.

The Coast Guard is shifting the operation of the seasonal boat station between May and October from seven days a week to weekends and holidays only. The goal of this change is to best utilize Coast Guard assets and ensure their availability when most people are on the water.

Currently the Coast Guard sends personnel from Station Philadelphia to staff the facility in Salem. This change will allow those personnel to receive more training and participate in security operations during the week. A Coast Guard boatcrew will be ready to launch from Salem every weekend from late May until mid-October.

The Coast Guard has been running seasonal stations on the Great Lakes for over 30 years. Its about time to do the same in coastal waters.
