Coast Guard to assist with crane transport in the Port of Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — The Coast Guard will monitor and assist with the arrival of a ship carrying four large container cranes into the Port of Los Angeles June 23.

Coast Guard Sector Los Angeles-Long Beach will establish and enforce a temporary safety zone 200 yards ahead and 100 yards on each side and behind the motor vessel Tern while it transports the cranes through the Los Angeles Main Channel and under the Vincent Thomas Bridge.

Entering this safety zone is prohibited unless authorized by the Captain of the Port or his designated representative. Mariners requesting permission to transit through the safety zone may request authorization by calling 310521-3800 or on VHF-FM channel 16 156.8 MHz.

The transit of the cranes will also require the Vincent Thomas Bridge to be closed to road traffic for approximately 30 minutes as the vessel carrying cranes passes underneath. The estimated time of closure is from 4:15 a.m. to 4:45 a.m.

This project has been closely coordinated through a partnership between the U.S. Coast Guard, Port of Los Angeles, Los Angles Port Police, California Department of Transportation, California Highway Patrol, and the Yusen Container terminal.
