Coast Guard suspends search for person in the water near Governors Island, NY

NEW YORK — The Coast Guard suspended its search Friday morning for a person in the water near Governors Island, New York.

Upon being notified of the incident, Coast Guard, NYPD, and FDNY units were immediately dispatched to the scene Thursday night saturating the area searching for the person until just after midnight. Coast Guard units continued to search for the person through the night.

Late Thursday evening the Coast Guard received a call from New York Vessel Traffic Service stating that multiple people witnessed a man jump off the bow of the Spirit of America ferry at approximately 10:15 p.m.

The ferry crew threw a life ring into the water and deployed their small boat. They were also able to confirm the man went overboard from their onboard surveillance footage.

  • A Coast Guard Air Station Atlantic City MH-65 Dolphin helicopter crew
  • New York Police Department Marine Unit
  • New York Fire Department Marine Unit
  • New York Police Department Aviation Unit
